ART MOTION

DESIGN PROJECT

This project was developed to address a critical gap I identified in junior designer portfolios, most graduates lack motion design skills and don't show their creative process, both things Brisbane employers consistently request. The task was to create an animated motion poster series that would demonstrate technical animation capabilities while documenting comprehensive strategic thinking from initial concept through final execution.

Problem & Solution
Brisbane creative agencies wanted junior designers who could contribute motion design work from day one, not just static design execution. They also expressed frustration that graduate portfolios rarely show "how designers think" only polished final outcomes. My solution was to create a bold koi fish motion poster series with complete process documentation, proving both technical animation proficiency and strategic problem-solving abilities that differentiate me from template-driven graduate work.

Research & Inspiration
I chose koi fish as my central motif because of their symbolic meaning (transformation, perseverance) and natural suitability for fluid animation. The organic flowing forms contrast beautifully with geometric typography and patterns. I researched traditional Japanese art, contemporary motion design work, and water-based animation references to inform my visual approach while maintaining my bold, experimental aesthetic.

Process & Tools
My process began with rough concept sketches exploring different koi compositions (Weeks 1-3), then developed three refined digital illustrations in Adobe Illustrator (Weeks 6-8). I learned After Effects to animate the compositions with organic swimming movements and water ripple effects (Weeks 9-10). Nick Maguire, my industry mentor, provided weekly feedback that shifted my approach from creating "portfolio art" to demonstrating job-ready strategic thinking. I finalized animations, built the portfolio website, and created a showreel featuring all my work (Weeks 11-12).

Outcome
The final deliverables include animated koi fish motion posters (34 second loops), a 30 second showreel showcasing my range across multiple projects, and a strategically crafted CV positioning me for Brisbane creative employment.

Testimonials & Engagement Evidence:
